Methylcellulose is used in the preparation of paints and limewashes, as well as mortars or lime stuccoes. It is an adjuvant and a water retainer. It is also used as a resin for the manufacture of traditional gouaches as well as for the preparation of vinyl, acrylic and tempera colors.
Do not use hot water for glue preparation. Methylcellulose dissolves in cold water, forming a solution or clear viscous gel. To use as glue or as a binder in plaster or paint mixes, mix 15 to 30 gr of powder in 1 liter of water.
In cold water (temperature below 38°C), add the powder, stirring gently. Slow dispersion allows a good separation of particles. Continue stirring until a homogeneous solution is obtained. The concentration depends on the work to be done.
