Brun de Cassel d'Italie is an earth which comes from the Vérone area (Italie). This earth was originally harvested in peat or lignite deposits. Because of its poor resistance to light it was replaced in the nineteenth century by pigments based on calcined oxides.

L'ombre de Chypre FL (= umber FL of Cyprus) is an umber that comes from Cyprus. The umber earth probably owes its name to the latin "umbra" (shadow) which was once used to cast down the colors. Cyprus is the largest producer of earths in the Mediterranean basin. Traces of this earth can be found everywhere. They are taken in the form of clay which makes them accessible and cheap pigments.
